Big Meta Issue: Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger Users Log Out
If you found yourself unexpectedly signed out of your Facebook, Messenger, Threads, or Instagram account on Tuesday morning, you were not the only one.
Reports started emerging around 10 a.m. about users being forcibly logged out of their Meta accounts. It soon became clear that this was a widespread issue, with virtually no one able to access their Meta accounts.
The outage monitoring site DownDetector reported a surge in issues, with nearly 400,000 Facebook-related complaints by 10:45 a.m.
In addition, Meta is in the process of removing Oculus accounts and all associated data. Here's how you can protect your information.
When attempting to log in, users encountered an error message stating, "An Unknown Error Has Occurred," and faced similar issues when trying to reset passwords. Even the two-factor authentication system malfunctioned, sending the code but failing to prompt users to enter it.
Given that all affected platforms require Meta for login, early theories suggest the problem might be related to Meta's identity and access management system. As of now, there have been no reports of network failures or large-scale DDoS attacks. This incident is reminiscent of a similar outage in 2021, which was attributed to an incorrect configuration change.
We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
